Big Mama and her Biddie!

Big Mama has been a good Mama! The biddie is 1 week and 1 day old now and doing great! She is so funny! She trys to peck everywhere mama pecks - in the same spot! I've seen her already trying to scratch - just like mama! I've seen her flap her little baby wings - just like mama! She is adorable! (hoping its a she!) and I can see her feathers growing already too! There was one little spot on her tail that I noticed since she was born that I thought was just a dirty spot, but it turns out to be a dark feather! I think she may grow up to look like her mama! Even though her Daddy, Buster, is a completely white leghorn. I wonder how that gene thing works with chickens? hhhmmmmm...

Farm Friends!

Friday I spent a little bit of time with my friend Suzanne on her farm!  She has about 60 cows that are all "due"!  So things are quite busy over there!  Here are a few video clips to share with you! Sorry for the video being smaller, I shot it on my Iphone. I plan to go back this week and film a real birth for you! Would you like to see that? Or not?

Mama Cow and calf - just born the morning of this video! The baby is sleeping so good and mama is so gentle and caring.... aaawwww!

Baby Calf standing up! This little one is only 3 days old!

Cotton, the burrough does NOT like to share the treats (that is a mineral block he is chewing on!)

Hand Sewn Placemats!

I got a sewing machine for Christmas!  A really beginner one, The Singer Simple! This is the firs thing I've actually sewn!!  I got the instructions from a great little magazine called "Sew It All" and it has lots of fun easy things I plan to try!  I'm not so interested in sewing clothes, but more interested in sewing stuff!
Okay, "sew", I will tell you a little bit about how I made these, although if you want full instructions pick up the current issue of Sew It All Mag.  I picked up all the material from Wal-mart.  The solid red is Duck Material.  It is sold in 2 yard packs for like $8.  The patterned paper, I mean, fabric, also came from Wal-mart in a pack of small squares wrapped up in a ribbon called Fat Quarters, also for about $7.  I cut all the pieces according to directions and layed out my idea of what I wanted it to look like! Like this:
I then pinned down the first scrap with the ribbon on top and did a zigzag stitch on top of the ribbon.
I did this for each 4 sides.  Then I placed the batting between the top and bottom layers pinned it on and sewed all the way around the border of the placemat.  I left a 4" opening on one end so I could turn it inside out, then sewed around the edge again for a nice top stitching finished look!  It was so easy!  I can't wait to make more!!  Hope you like it!

Our first Baby Biddie!

We're Grandparents! One of our hens, "big mama", a dominique chicken, sat on 1 egg for about 23 days!  And Sunday her little baby biddie hatched!  I didn't see it hatch but I notice Big Mama was in the garden shed yard for an extended period of time and wondered why she wasn't back on her nest.  So I decided to go check things out!  She was talking up a storm and I couldn't figure out what she was cackling about.  I went over to were she was pacing back and forth next to this piece of black cloth that had blew over into the yard from the barn.  I sat there in silence for a moment trying to figure out why she was upset and that's when I heard it! Peep, peep!  Peep, peep!  I spoke out loud with excitement in my voice... "Could it be?"  I asked myself!  I lifted the cloth and there was a tiny ball of yellow fuzz!  She had gotten under neath the cloth and mama couldn't get to her, which was why she was upset!  Mama was then able to see her and get to her!  We were all SO HAPPY then!  This was our first biddie experience and it's too cute to even try to explain!  But, I'll have more excited news, perhaps by next weekend, b/c our other hen, Sally, is expecting 2 babies!

Really cool software find!

Greetings followers! I came across something that makes my life so much easier and I wanted to share it with you in case you have a need for this too!  Do you ever have to copy and paste the same pieces of frequently used text on a regular basis?  You have to go find the last place you typed it, copy it again and go back to where you were and paste it.  I find myself doing this all the time with several different little text strings I copy.

Well, I found this software called FlashPaste that saves all of these little text strings for you, right at your fingertips!  You simply hit your 'hot key' on your keyboard and choose from your list of text strings what you want to paste, right there at your cursor!  It is so handy!!  I can already tell you this is going to be software I can't live without!  Check it out for yourself!

P.S. I'm not affiliated with Flashpaste, just really like this handy tool!
